Corvinus launches six new English-language MA programmes in September

The five English-language master’s programmes to be launched at Corvinus are all new to higher education in Hungary. Four of the five courses will last one year instead of the usual two. The new courses:

  • Economic Behaviour Analysis
  • Diplomacy
  • Marketing Strategy and Innovation
  • Advanced Supply Chain Management
  • Public Governance

Economic Behaviour Analysis

It is the only two-year course among the new English-language MA programmes and is a unique programme at regional level, too. It focuses on the triad of consumer and organisational behaviour and decisions, and social and economic change.

“Our students will become high-level, interdisciplinary professionals with a range of job opportunities from HR and marketing to research roles, based on international experience” – says Corvinus press release.

Career opportunities:

  • HR/personnel
  • marketing, advertising, media, PR
  • decision analysis and consultancy at the companies and institutions of the competitive, non-profit and public sectors
  • financial services, manufacturing and commerce
  • education, research

Together with the five new programmes, a total of six new English-language MA courses will be launched at Corvinus in September 2023 (Building E of Corvinus, photo: Corvinus)

Diplomacy

The one-year course will train students to become diplomats, supported not only by an intensive curriculum and compulsory work placements, but also by support for shorter study trips abroad.

Marketing Strategy and Innovation

This course is a one-year intensive version of the MA programme of Marketing. „We train future leaders who can make complex marketing strategy decisions across different sectors and types of business, in both local and international markets,” says Corvinus.

Career opportunities

  • Market researcher/marketing analyst
  • Brand/product manager
  • Key account manager at advertising agencies
  • Digital marketing specialist
  • Trade marketing specialist
  • Sales/key account manager
  • E-commerce expert
  • Media planner, purchaser
  • Internal communication, PR professional

Advanced Supply Chain Management

It is a one-year alternative to the master’s programme of Supply Chain Management. The objective of the programme is to train supply chain managers who understand the relations of integrated corporate logistic management and are able to control the corporate logistics system and the supply chains and networks of companies.

Public Governance

It is the one-year version of the master’s programme of Economics and Public Policy. The objective of the programme is to train economists who are able to effectively participate in community governance at local/regional, national and supranational levels.

Quarterly schedule

The new courses will run on a quarterly schedule with the advantage that students will study fewer subjects at the same time, giving them the opportunity to study a subject in more depth.

The Corvinus announcement on the launch of the new master’s courses points out that the Corvinus Scholarship is awarded for one academic year, so those studying for a one-year master’s programme in this format are guaranteed free of charge for the entire curriculum. In addition, a bachelor’s degree with an average of A grades guarantees admission to Corvinus Scholarship for the new master’s programmes.

Applications for the five new programmes can be submitted via felvi.hu. If you have already submitted your application, you can still modify it by adding new programmes or deleting existing ones until 15 February.

Two new English language courses will also be added to the BA programmes

Following Corvinus’ announcement last year, we wrote earlier that in addition to the five new courses currently offered, the university will launch three more new English-language courses from September 2023, which were not previously available in Hungary. Two of them (Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Data Science in Business) will be launched as a BA programme, while Political Economy as a MA programme.

Corvinus launches 7 cross-semester specialist postgraduate programs – one of those in English

The name of the cross-semester academic specialisation course in English is corporate internal and executive coach. The aim of the 2 semesters specialist postgraduate program is to help internal coaches, HR professionals and top managers to develop their coaching competencies.

The program fully complies with International Coaching Federation (ICF) standards to guarantee high levels of professionalism, Corvinus website says.

Graduates of the program receive both university certificate and also a certificate on the completion of coach training hours accredited by ICF. Students completing the program receive a vocational certificate (Corporate and Executive Coach).

Former students, and when at least 3 employees from the same company enrol in the program, receive a discount on the price of the courses.

[kiemelt]Postgraduate specialisation programmes are courses based on higher education and professional qualifications. Applications are subject to a bachelor’s or master’s degree, university or college diploma.[/kiemelt]

We reported earlier that from September 2023, Corvinus will launch three English-language programs that have not been available in Hungary before. Two of them (Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Data Science in Business) will be launched as a bachelor’s program (BA), while Political Economy as a master’s program (MA).

Corvinus launches three new English-language programmes

All three programmes – which are very popular in Western Europe and the US – will be taught in English, further increasing the proportion of English programmes at the university. More than half of the university’s undergraduate programmes and almost two thirds of its master’s programmes are launched in English or in English as well.

PPE

The PPE (Philosophy, Politics, Economics) programme is based on an approach following the Anglo-Saxon training tradition which is being spread throughout Europe: it explores the interconnected issues of economy- society – politics with a philosophical foundation and value for the citizens of future generations. The training provides a deep and solid foundation for all those who wish to move forward into politics, economics and science, as analysts and leaders – Corvinus says about PPE in its website.

Data Science in Business

The other new English-language bachelor’s programme, Data Science in Business, will provide opportunities to acquire competences in data modelling and data analytics.

“Individual and teamwork will equip you with strong methodological, IT and business competences. You can improve your skills at our partner universities and companies. If you want to continue the journey in this field, you can apply for several Masters and later PhD studies” – Corvinus says about the new BA programme.

Political Economy

The Master’s programme in Political Economy offers intellectually stimulating insights into how political and economic life interact with each other and how these two spheres jointly influence social and economic outcomes.

The programme aims to maintain a balance between theoretical and practical knowledge on the institutional stability and change of diverse political and economic systems, their role played in economic development, and their intended and unintended social, political and economic consequences.

“You can expect to progress to work in a role like analyst, consultant or project manager – in multinational companies, consulting firms, intergovernmental organisations, international NGOs, research institutes, public administration or in the media” – Corvinus says about the MA programme in its website.

BME and MOME also launch new English-language programmes

From September 2023, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) will launch a new English-language bachelor training programme in physics and engineering, the first of its kind in Hungary, in response to the shortage of specialists in innovative companies.

Two new English-language MA programmes (Animation and Design) will be available at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) from September 2023. Together with the first two English MA programmes launched in September 2022, four English MA programmes will be available at MOME in the next academic year.

This is what the new Corvinus campus will look like

The plans for the new Corvinus campus on Ménesi Road were presented at a press conference on 9 December. The building complex is expected to be inaugurated next autumn. Márton Barta, Head of the Strategy at Corvinus, said that 600-700 students will be able to study at the campus, which will house

  • educational buildings,
  • several sports and community spaces,
  • 11,000 square metres park,
  • a dormitory with 180 places,
  • the University’s Entrepreneurship Incubation Programme,
  • the Data Space, home to innovative data science projects.

Corvinus was elected among the top 3 business schools in Eastern Europe

Eduniversal has published its yearly ranking of the world’s top 1,000 business schools which represent 154 countries.

Eduniversal World Convention 2022 was held in Cairo, where the top three business schools in each of the world’s regions (nine geographical zones) were elected based on the votes of the leaders of the universities included in the Eduniversal ranking, according to press release of Corvinus.

The leaders of the best 1000 business schools had to answer the question of which university they would recommend to their students if they wanted to study in a region other than their own.

Prague and Ljubljana business schools were voted best in the region

Corvinus has again been ranked among the top three business schools in the Eastern European region. It was tied for third place with St. Petersburg University in the region covering 21 countries. There was a tie for the first place as well: Prague University of Economics and Business, and University of Ljubljana were ranked as the best business schools in the region. University of Warsaw came second.

In recent years, Corvinus has been consistently ranked among the top three business schools in Eastern Europe, coming second in 2020, 2018 and 2017 and first in 2019.

We recently reported that Corvinus was again the only Hungarian institution which had been included in the Financial Times’ list of the world’s best management training programmes this year. With its Management and Leadership master programme, Corvinus has been placed 98th in the top 100.

How companies and universities can make a real win-win situation

Corvinus University and MVM

In the context of the cooperation, MVM Group provides professional support for the training courses of the Corvinus University of Budapest. Its employees participate in the development of teaching materials tailored to the needs of the company, provide expert support for educational background work, offer consulting services for the preparation of theses and TDK dissertations, act as guest speakers, organise factory visits to share their professional experience with university students, and offer work placements. Corvinus also undertakes to help the MVM Group select the most appropriate trainee candidates, to contribute to the professional training of its staff, and to perform research and methodological development on topics requested by the company.

Consortium between MATE and Energofish-Czikkhalas

A consortium of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Energofish and Czikkhalas Kft. is working on a project worth more than HUF 700 million to develop environmentally friendly fishing gear and technologies for the production of two native fish species.

Amongst others, the project included the development of a product that could replace shotgun pellets used in fishing. Lead, which is toxic to the ecosystem, is estimated to be consumed in the EU fishing tackle trade at a rate of 6,000-8,000 tonnes per year. The new product would be produced using a similar or higher atomic weight material, which is safer for the environment. In addition, rubber maize, which is also used in large quantities as fish bait, would be transformed so that it can degrade relatively quickly and completely in nature.

A sensor will monitor the health parameters of cattle, for the development of which the consortium of Béke Agrár Kft., a livestock breeding company based in Orosháza, and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE) has won a development grant from the European Union worth HUF 600 million.

The R&D project aims to develop a lifetime wearable, wireless rechargeable, slowly discharging sensor for cattle that monitors body temperature, movement activity and position. And through a phone app, it sends an alert to the owner if intervention is required. Based on heart rate analysis, this would allow early detection of diseases, stress conditions, and reliable indication of breeding and calving.

TF and MTK

Even if it is not a traditional corporate cooperation, the recent cooperation between the Hungarian University of Sports Science (TF) and the Sándor Károly Football Academy of MTK Budapest is a win-win situation.

Students of the institution can benefit from being able to attend training sessions and courses at a high level academy. And TF is pleased when clubs are open to their scientific results, use them in practice and do not „just” do research for books and studies.

Corvinus: the ecological footprint of Budapest households is incredibly high

A study by a Hungarian research team of four members was published in the journal Sustainable Cities and Society in September. It provides a novel analysis of the environmental sustainability of urbanisation in Hungary, the Budapest metropolitan area.

The ecological footprint is a measure of demand, i.e. how many hectares of land are needed to produce the materials used.

This is the so-called global hectare, a measure of the ecological footprint, which is precisely defined each year.

[kiemelt]It shows the annual productive capacity of arable land, forests and water worldwide.[/kiemelt]

The publication, made with the involvement of researchers from the Eötvös Loránd Research Network, the Regional Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Széchenyi István University, and the Corvinus University of Budapest, examined the period between 2003 and 2018.

The authors found that the ecological deficit of the country as a whole has been gradually decreasing since the early 2000s, driven by population decline and an increase in biocapacity for the country as a whole. However, Budapest’s ecological resources have decreased, which may be due to environmental degradation, the shrinkage of biologically active areas caused by urbanisation and urbanisation itself.

The share of the Budapest metropolitan area, which includes the capital and its agglomeration, in Hungary’s total ecological footprint increased from 28.3 percent to 31.5 percent between 2003 and 2018.

In the agglomeration zone, however, the excess increased from 2.1 to 2.4 times. This is an increase of 7% in a decade and a half, which is not offset by the biocapacity of the ecosystem on the supply side.

The results can help political decision-makers identify hotspots that are responsible for above-average ecological imbalances in urban regions.

Collaboration among universities to strengthen innovation

The Innovation Cooperation Agreement was signed on 18 October at Corvinus University by Rector Előd Takáts on behalf of Corvinus, Rector András Gelencsér on behalf of the University of Pannonia and President Zoltán Birkner on behalf of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

„The collaboration is an excellent example of how to effectively exploit the synergies existing in Hungarian innovation science workshops and share our results with the public and economic actors.  Corvinus also offers two types of professional training in this field – the Research and Innovation Manager and the Professional Economist programs – and we will incorporate the experience gained through this cooperation into their development,” said Előd Takáts, Rector of Corvinus.

The agreement was signed by Rector Előd Takáts (Corvinus), President Zoltán Birkner (National Research, Development and Innovation Office) and Rector András Gelencsér (University of Pannonia). Photo: Corvinus

„In a world of emergencies and crises, it is particularly important to exploit the results of innovation in different professional fields as quickly and as extensively as possible, and to create a dialogue between the various sectors and society. The biggest obstacle to the exploitation of innovation products is habituation and lack of knowledge, which is as challenging to overcome as the development of the innovation idea itself. We expect that our cooperation will provide indispensable support for the former process,” said András Gelencsér, Rector of the University of Pannonia.

Zoltán Birkner, President of the NRDIH, highlighted: „We are on the right track, with knowledge-producing universities and research institutes, as well as businesses, becoming more and more aware of this. The success of university-level innovation training is no coincidence, as the demand for experts who can see through innovation processes and manage them on a day-to-day basis has been growing steadily in recent years.”

With the agreement, the signatory institutions are bringing together their intellectual and scientific capacities in order to communicate, promote and raise the profile of the scientific results of innovation management in Hungary and internationally to the interested and involved public. As part of this effort, they will seek to establish professional research, programs, publications and collaborations in the discipline, and to develop related training.

In order to share and promote the scientific and professional results of national and international innovation, the collaborating organisations will

[kiemelt]establish the National Innovation Conference, with the common determination to develop it into an international event.[/kiemelt]

The aim of the conference is to create an opportunity for a common and diverse reflection on innovation and the transfer of innovation-related professional knowledge, thus contributing to a more successful and competitive domestic entrepreneurial sector and a more developed and flourishing innovation socio-economic environment. Corvinus and the University of Pannonia will alternate hosting the conference each year, with Corvinus hosting the conference in November 2022. The forerunner of the event was organised by the University of Pannonia last year.

More than 300 students in startup training at Corvinus

What is the purpose of HSUP?

HSUP is Hungary’s first university-level, practice-oriented start-up training program, which aims to provide future generations with the opportunity to learn about the world of entrepreneurship and the basics of solution-oriented, innovative ways of thinking within the walls of the university.

The two-semester program will also raise awareness among talented young people in higher education that turning innovative ideas into businesses is a career opportunity that many may not even think about at this age.

Photo: Corvinus University of Budapest / Facebook

Who can realise their idea?

This academic year, 321 people have applied for the course, a much higher number than last year. For the 2021/2022 semester, 95 students have taken HSUP at bachelor and master level.

Enrolment in the second semester is not automatic; those who can take the course in the second semester will receive a scholarship and can implement their idea. Last year, Corvinus students developed 6 ideas and even joined teams from other universities, so 54 out of 95 scholarship students were actively involved in mentoring and development work. The project ideas included profit-oriented prototype development, as well as sustainability and ecological footprint reduction ideas supporting services.

What can participating students gain?

The growing popularity of the course may be due to the fact that it allows students to express their creativity, to have the opportunity to realise their ideas, participate in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and build their network of contacts, while at the same time allowing them to face the opportunities and challenges of becoming an entrepreneur at a young age.

Industry experts also believe that the niche training launched at the initiative of the NRDIH can have a positive impact on the development of the domestic innovation ecosystem in the longer term.

Corvinus will launch one-year master programmes next year

From academic year 2023/24, students can get their master degree in one year in the following study programmes:

  • Supply Chain Management,
  • Public Policy and Management,
  • International Economy and Business,
  • Marketing.

The accelerated one-year master programmes will be open to students who have collected enough extra credits or relevant work experience in previous years. The opportunity, which is unique among Hungarian higher education institution in economics, will be open not only to the students of Corvinus, but any student who meets the general admission requirements of the given master programme:

  • bachelor’s degree,
  • a medium level language exam in English,
  • and enough credits.

According to the press release of Corvinus, acceptable professional experience will be any knowledge that fits the required programme:

  • work experience,
  • college programme,
  • specialised training,
  • Students’ Scientific Association (TDK) research in the subject of the programme,
  • any recognizable credit obtained earlier at Corvinus or other university, or a preparatory course for the entrance exam.

[kiemelt]For students attending the self-funded programmes, it is an advantage that in this one-year master programme, they have to pay fees for one year only, but they can apply for the Corvinus Scholarship at the one-year programme, too.[/kiemelt]

We recently reported that Corvinus was again the only Hungarian higher education institution which had been included in the Financial Times’ list of the world’s best management training programmes this year. With its Management and Leadership master programme, Corvinus has been placed 98th in the top 100. In the indicator evaluating career support, the university was ranked in the top 10.

Winter break will be extended – Corvinus announced measures to save energy

Corvinus, like several other universities in Hungary, has decided to introduce measures to save energy. As part of the measures, the building of the university will be closed for both students and staff members during the winter break from 23 December to 15 January.

According to a press release of Corvinus, with the start of the heating season, lessons will be held in two buildings (Building C and the Sóház/Salt House) from 22 October. The lessons originally scheduled for Saturdays in the Main Building (E) will be held in Building C and the Sóház/Salt House.

The January part of the examination period will be shifted

The examination period has also been reorganised: the first week of the period will be from 19 to 23 December, and the January part of the examination period will be shifted to 16.01.2023 – 05.02.2023, meaning that students will still have four weeks to sit for their exams.

The period of final examinations will be between 30 January and 3 February. Examinations will be held in person in the buildings of the university.

Project week cancelled for the spring semester

The registration week of the spring semester will start on 13 February and end on 26 February, while the study period will start on 20 February and end on 26 May. There will be no project week in the spring semester. Lecturers who would teach project week subjects, may choose from the following options:

  • not deliver the subjects of the project week,
  • spread the lessons related to the project week subjects over the semester.

The possible changes affecting the dormitories are still being negotiated, according to the press release of Corvinus.

Other universities have also announced saving measures

Not only Corvinus has introduced measures to save energy. The heating in lecture and dormitory halls can be set to a maximum of 20 degrees, according to energy-saving measures at Pázmány Péter Catholic University. Hot water is also turned off, and autumn, spring breaks will be cancelled.

The University of Pécs has also announced its savings measures in response to the significant rise in energy prices. According to these, the temperature provided by heating cannot exceed 20 degrees in the university’s lecture, office and dormitory halls, and 18 degrees in the public halls and corridors. The savings measures also modify the structure of the academic year: the autumn break is cancelled.

ELTE had already changed the structure of academic year at the beginning of September. The autumn break has been moved to 12-17 December, so the last day of the autumn semester will be the 9th December (10th December for correspondence training).

One of the managerial training programs at Corvinus has made it to the world’s top list

Corvinus University is ranked number twelve in the 2023 QS Masters in Management Rankings. The CEMS Master’s in International Management (MIM) is one of the world’s most prestigious management programs,
